Filson
Overview
Filson is one of those brands that I keep coming back to. Founded in 1897 by Clinton C. Filson in Seattle, the company started by outfitting prospectors heading to the Klondike Gold Rush. They needed gear that would survive brutal conditions, and Filson delivered. Over 125 years later, that same mentality drives the brand.
I appreciate Filson because their stuff is genuinely overbuilt. The Tin Cloth fabric is legendary — waxed cotton that shrugs off rain and abuse. Their bags are the kind of thing you hand down to your kid. The aesthetic leans rugged and outdoorsy, but it works just as well in a city as it does in the backcountry.
One thing I want to be upfront about: not everything Filson makes is produced in the USA. Their core heritage products — the Tin Cloth line, many bags, and key outerwear pieces — are still made in Seattle. But as the brand has expanded, some items are manufactured overseas. Check the product page before you buy if made-in-USA matters to you.
What They Make
- Bags (duffels, backpacks, briefcases, totes)
- Outerwear (waxed jackets, rain gear, vests)
- Shirts and flannels
- Accessories (belts, wallets, hats)
Where They Make It
Filson's primary factory is in Seattle, Washington, where they have been manufacturing since the beginning. Their heritage and Tin Cloth products are made there. However, as the product line has grown, some items — particularly newer apparel lines — are produced overseas. Filson is generally transparent about this on their product pages.
Price Range
Filson runs $60 to $600 depending on the product. Accessories and smaller items start at the low end, while flagship bags and outerwear pieces push toward the top. The Seattle-made products tend to be priced higher, and they are worth it for the build quality.
Notable Products
- Tin Cloth Cruiser — The jacket that built the brand. Waxed Tin Cloth that is practically waterproof, with enough pockets to carry everything you need. It does not look new for long, and that is the point.
- Medium Duffle — A workhorse travel bag in Rugged Twill. Simple design, bombproof construction, and a patina that improves with every trip.
- Mackinaw Cruiser — A dense wool cruiser jacket that has been keeping loggers and outdoorsmen warm since the early 1900s. Seriously warm without being bulky.
- Journeyman Backpack — A Tin Cloth and Rugged Twill backpack built for daily carry. Padded laptop sleeve, leather straps, and a structure that does not sag or slouch.
