A good flannel is the foundation of every fall and winter wardrobe. These six are made in the USA and built to last decades, not seasons.

Vintage Flannel Work Shirt

Brand: Filson Price: $145 Made in: Seattle, WA

Filson's Vintage Flannel is the benchmark. The brushed cotton is thick enough to wear as a light jacket, and it gets softer every time you wash it. I've worn mine at least 200 times and it looks better now than it did new. This is a buy-it-once flannel.

Best for: Best overall

Original Flannel Shirt

Brand: Vermont Flannel Price: $110 Made in: East Barre, VT

Vermont Flannel does one thing: flannel. They make it in a small factory in East Barre and they've been doing it since 1991. The brushed cotton is cloud-soft out of the package. If Filson is the rugged option, Vermont Flannel is the cozy one.

Best for: Softest option

Rangewax Flannel

Brand: Schaefer Outfitter Price: $89 Made in: Fort Worth, TX

Schaefer Outfitter out of Fort Worth makes ranchwear that's built for actual ranch work. Their flannel is heavy, well-constructed, and priced fairly. It doesn't have the brand recognition of Filson, but the quality is right there.

Ultra Heavy Flannel

Brand: Iron Heart Price: $360 Made in: Cut and sewn in USA

Iron Heart's Ultra Heavy Flannel is in a class by itself. The fabric is woven in Japan and then cut and sewn in the US. At 12 oz, this flannel is heavier than most people's jackets. It's absurdly expensive, but if you want the absolute best flannel money can buy, this is it.

Brand: LC King Price: $68 Made in: Bristol, TN

LC King's Pointer Brand flannel follows the same formula as their jeans — honest workwear at honest prices, made in Bristol, Tennessee. The flannel isn't as thick as Filson or Vermont Flannel, but at $68 it's a solid buy for a shirt you won't baby.

Flannel Shirt

Brand: Dixxon Price: $72 Made in: Phoenix, AZ

Dixxon started in the motorcycle and hot rod scene and their flannels reflect that culture. They use a proprietary blend that resists shrinking and the fit is more modern than most workwear brands. Limited drops sell out fast. Quality is good but not exceptional.

Best for: Best for heavy use
