A flashlight is a hard thing to make entirely in America, because the LEDs inside are usually made overseas. Even SureFire buys its LEDs abroad. So the honest question is not "is every part American" but "where is the light machined and built." These five are built in the USA, and we quote each maker's own wording so you can see exactly what it claims.
SureFire EDC2-DFT Turbo
SureFire’s EDC2-DFT Turbo is a long-reaching everyday light, rated at 100,000 candela and 632 meters on its included rechargeable cell. SureFire machines and assembles it in the US and is upfront that its LEDs come from abroad.

EDC2-DFT Turbo
A long-throw everyday light: 700 lumens and 100,000 candela on the included SF18650 rechargeable cell, rated to reach 632 meters, or 600 lumens on two 123A batteries. SureFire says its flashlights are designed, machined, tested and assembled in the US from US-sourced aluminum, with LEDs bought from makers abroad. That one imported part is why SureFire itself says it cannot legally label its lights “Made in the U.S.A.”

Bravo 2-Cell (AVS Head)
A configurable duty light: you choose the head, tailcap and bezel in Elzetta's builder. The AVS head produces 850 lumens on the Bravo body, and the light runs on two CR123A batteries, which are included. Elzetta says all the electronics are fully potted, meaning sealed in solid compound against shock and moisture. Labelled “Made in USA.” $209 to $271.40 depending on configuration in October 2026.

Stiletto Pro
A flat light shaped to ride in a pocket like a knife instead of rolling around. 1,000 lumens on high, 300 on medium and 25 on low, from a built-in battery you charge over USB-C, with an LED fuel gauge. Same origin as the EDC2: SureFire says all its illumination products are designed and manufactured in the US, with imported LEDs. $279 in October 2026.

MDC E2XTL V3 Pocket Thrower
A small light built to reach far: up to 1,150 lumens and 65,000 candela on a protected 18650, or 800 lumens and 55,000 candela on two CR123As. Malkoff's label reads “Made in the USA. Some parts not domestically sourced.” The company is in Enterprise, Alabama. $239.99 on sale from $272.98 in October 2026, and stock comes and goes, so check before you count on it.

ML300L 4-Cell D LED
The big D-cell light, updated with an LED. 1,002 lumens, a 511-meter beam and an adjustable focus, with runtimes of 5 hours 45 minutes on high and up to 434 hours on eco from four alkaline D cells, which are not included. Maglite says it is “designed and manufactured in the USA with some imported components.” $59.99 in October 2026. It is heavy and not rechargeable, and it is the cheapest US-built light here by a wide margin.

Lumens, candela and beam distance
Many flashlight makers rate their lights to the ANSI/PLATO FL 1 standard. When a box says FL 1, the numbers mean the same thing from brand to brand.[7]
- Lumens measure the total light coming out. More lumens light up more of a room or yard.
- Candela measures how bright the center of the beam is. It decides how far the light reaches. A tight, high-candela beam throws farther than a floody beam with more lumens.
- Beam distance is how far the beam stays at 0.25 lux, about the light of a full moon. It is worked out from candela: the distance in meters is twice the square root of the candela. That is why SureFire's 100,000 candela becomes 632 meters.
For everyday carry, a few hundred lumens with a mix of throw and flood is plenty. A high-candela "thrower" like the Malkoff or the EDC2 earns its place if you need to see across a field or down a long driveway.
Batteries: CR123A, 18650 or D
- CR123A is a small lithium primary cell. It stores for years and works well in the cold, which is why duty lights like the Elzetta use it. It is expensive to burn through daily.
- 18650 is a larger rechargeable lithium-ion cell. Lights that take one usually run brighter for longer, and you recharge instead of buying cells. Many lights, including the EDC2 and the Malkoff, take either one 18650 or two CR123As.
- Built-in battery (Stiletto Pro) is the easiest to live with. You charge it like a phone. When the battery ages, you cannot swap in a fresh cell.
- D cells are cheap and sold everywhere, and they are heavy. Good for a light that lives in a truck or a drawer for emergencies.
Water and drop ratings
FL 1 uses the IPX water codes from IEC 60529, and adds a drop test:[7]
- IPX4: splash resistant. Fine in rain.
- IPX7: survives temporary immersion at 1 meter for 30 minutes. Drop it in a puddle or a creek and it keeps working.
- IPX8: rated deeper or longer than IPX7, at a depth the maker states.
- Impact resistance is the height in meters the light was dropped onto concrete and still worked, with a 1-meter minimum.
Not every maker publishes these numbers for every light. If water or drops matter for your work, look for the rating on the product page before you buy.
How to read "made in USA" on a flashlight
The FTC's rule for an unqualified "Made in USA" claim is that the product is all or virtually all made here. One imported LED is enough to rule that out for most lights, which is why the honest US makers use qualified wording. SureFire says so directly.[2] Read the label for what it says:
- "Made in USA" (Elzetta): the maker is claiming all or virtually all.
- "Made in the USA, some parts not domestically sourced" (Malkoff) and "designed and manufactured in the USA with some imported components" (Maglite): built here, with named foreign parts.
- "Designed, machined, tested and assembled in the U.S." (SureFire): the same idea in SureFire's own words.
