The moc toe is a boot with a sewn apron across the front and, usually, a soft wedge sole. Four of the best-known ones are still built in the US. They are not built to the same standard, though, and each maker says so in its own words. Red Wing's two are labelled plain "Made in USA." Thorogood's and Danner's carry qualified labels, which we quote below.

Red Wing’s Classic Moc 875 carries a plain “Made in USA” label, which Red Wing defines as built start to finish in the US with over 95% US materials. It is Goodyear welted and resoleable, on the white Traction Tred wedge most people picture when they think of a moc toe.

Classic Moc 875
The boot most people picture when they hear “moc toe.” Oro Legacy leather from Red Wing's own S.B. Foot tannery, a Goodyear leather welt with Puritan triple-stitching, and the white Traction Tred wedge sole. Red Wing labels it “Made in USA,” which by its own definition means built start to finish here with over 95% US-made materials. $329.99 at Red Wing in October 2026.

American Heritage 6-Inch Tobacco Moc Toe (814-4200)
The work-rated moc toe. Tobacco oil-tanned leather, a Goodyear storm welt, a slip-resistant MAXWear Wedge outsole and an electrical hazard (EH) rating. Thorogood's label reads “Made in USA with USA and globally sourced components,” and the 814-4200 is on parent company Weinbrenner's Made in the USA list. Thorogood does not publish a price; dealers listed it around $250 to $265 in October 2026.

Classic Moc 1907

Bull Run Moc Toe 6-Inch Brown (15563)
Stitchdown construction, an unlined oiled full-grain upper and a soft Danner Wedge outsole. Danner's label is “Made in USA with Imported Components”: overseas partners do part of the construction, then the uppers are formed and the bottoms built by hand in Portland. Danner says the wedge is not recommended for daily use on asphalt. $260 at Danner in October 2026.

Goodyear welt vs. stitchdown
Both let a cobbler replace the sole, which is why a good moc toe can outlast several pairs of cheaper boots. They get there differently.
- Goodyear welt (Red Wing 875, Thorogood). A strip of leather is stitched to the upper and insole, and the sole is stitched to that strip. The boot has a cork or foam layer underneath your foot that takes your shape over time. It is stiffer at first and very easy to resole.
- Storm welt (Red Wing 1907, Thorogood). A Goodyear-type welt with a raised lip that wraps up around the seam, so water has a harder time getting in where the upper meets the sole.
- Stitchdown (Danner Bull Run). The upper is turned outward and stitched straight down to the midsole. It gives a wider, more stable platform and usually needs less break-in. Danner calls it handcrafted “to provide a wider platform.”[5]
Wedge vs. lug sole
Every boot here uses a wedge: one flat slab of sole from heel to toe, with no separate heel block. It is the classic moc-toe feel, and it is why these boots are known for comfort on hard floors.
- Good at: concrete shop floors, warehouse work, standing all day, and wear around town. The flat sole spreads your weight evenly.
- Bad at: mud, wet grass, loose gravel and ladders. A wedge has shallow tread and no heel edge to catch a rung. If you work outdoors on rough ground, a lug-soled boot from our American-made boots roundup is the better tool.
- Soft wedges wear faster. Danner says its own wedge is not recommended for daily use on asphalt.[5] A soft sole that feels great on day one flattens sooner on rough pavement.
- White soles show dirt. Red Wing's Traction Tred is the famous white wedge. It stains quickly, and that is normal.
Break-in: what to expect
A Goodyear-welted boot with a thick oil-tanned upper takes the longest to feel right. Stitchdown and softer leathers settle in faster. Whatever you buy:
- Wear them around the house for an hour or two a day before the first full workday.
- Use the socks you will actually work in. A thin sock in the store makes the fit feel looser than it will be.
- Heel slip is normal at first on a stiff welted boot. It should fade as the sole flexes. Pain across the widest part of your foot is a sizing problem, not a break-in problem.

How to read a moc toe label
Red Wing publishes what its labels mean, and the same four phrases show up across the industry:[4]
- “Made in USA”: built start to finish in the US with over 95% US-made materials (Red Wing's definition).
- “Made in USA with imported parts”: American workers do every step, but some materials come from abroad.
- “Made in USA with imported components”: some stitching or construction happens overseas, then the boot is finished here. Danner's Bull Run label works this way.
- “Assembled in USA”: the upper is made overseas, and final assembly happens here.
